The “Beaumont Hamel Armouries” cache is one of several geocaches that I am hiding in the Grand Falls - Windsor area to celebrate my hometown’s rich heritage over the past 100+ years.
The “Beaumont Hamel Armouries” is home to the 2nd Battalion of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment. Late during the First World War, the regiment was virtually wiped out at Beaumont Hamel on July 1, 1916, the first day of the Battle of the Somme. Beaumont-Hamel remains the most significant single military action fought by Newfoundlanders.
Since then July 1 has been marked as Memorial Day in Newfoundland and Labrador. Local military personnel, legion representatives, and descendants of those who fought in the First World War gather annually in the Memorial Grounds (only a few yards away from the Armouries) to remember their sacrifice.
The cache is a spice bottle covered in black electric tape. It contains only a small pencil, log and “First to Find” certificate.
