Geocache Description:

The cache is approximately 80 feet off Skyline Blvd to the East. Enter the wooded area adjacent to the 50 mile per hour sign just south of Redwood Terrace Rd. There is a relatively open area there leading to several trails south, but the cache is outside the this "clearing" to the north. My reading is within 17 feet.

This cache is on the edge of the Phleger Estate, part of the Golden Gate National Recreation area. Herman Phleger, a respected San Francisco lawyer, and his wife, Mary Elena Phleger, bought the large country house above West Union Creek (then known as Mountain Meadow) in 1931. The Phlegers became enamored with the trees that surrounded their home, and were early supporters of the Save the Redwoods League. In 1990, Mary Elena Phleger, widowed and determined to keep her family's estate intact, offered Peninsula Open Space Trust (POST) the opportunity to make it so. POST staff and volunteers worked feverishly, drawing hundreds of letters of support from local and state officials. The Phleger Estate turned from private property to public park early in 1995.

Throughout the Phleger Estate land are unusually tall redwood stumps (with wide girths) dating back to early logging days. Early logging practices were arduous: lumberjacks felled each massive redwood by hand, a process that could take up to eight days; the wood was then hauled by oxen teams to a nearby mill or the Redwood City port, where it was barged to San Francisco. You can see that remaining stumps, often circled by other redwoods growing in a formation known as a “fairy ring.” These sprouts, genetic clones of the parent tree, grow from the stump’s established root system. From 1852 to 1855, entrepreneur Willard Whipple logged the area, and traces of his Upper Mill and Lower Mill remain. Bobcats, coyote, foxes, deer, and mountain lions thrive in this redwood forest ecosystem. Residents of the small community of Kings Mountain love living among the wildlife and are active in preserving the local ecosystem.

The cache is an ammo can. It contains a camera, pen and log book. I'm hiding the cache as part of a birthday party and put treat bags in it, but the party guests will replace the treat bags with other miscellaneous items of their choosing. So who knows?
