Geocache Description:

This cache was inspired by our recent homecoming to my wife and son's home village of Panglao located in the Bohol Province of the Philippines.

Be afraid, be very afraid!!

In a place called the Chocolate Hills deep in the jungles of the southeastern Philippine archipelago lurks a creature so fearsome that even the mere mention of its name sends chills down the spine and strikes fear in the heart of any living being within hearing distance.

The Chocolate Hills

This creature is the Philippine Tarsier, known by locals as the Mawmag, that has been sometimes called "the world's smallest monkey." Although it is part of the Primate order that includes monkeys, lemurs, gorillas, and humans, it occupies an evolutionary branch that is ancestral to the monkeys and make them one of the most primitive primates. Its name is derived from its elongated "tarsus" or ankle bone.

Lord of the Tarsiers

The tarsier is a small creature that measure 15 cm in height and tips the scales at 130 gms. It will fit very comfortably in the human hand. Its uniquely large eyes are fixed in its skull; they cannot turn in their sockets. To adapt, its neck can turn nearly 180 degrees. Its huge eyes provide this nocturnal beast with excellent night vision.
Even More Frightening in Pairs

It clings to vertical tree and bamboo branches. Its specialized tarsus allows it to leap at least 3 meters from branch to branch without touching the ground. It is carnivorous and lunges at its prey which are primarily grasshoppers and crickets but may also include spiders, small crustacean, lizards, and birds. Upon seizure, the prey is carried to its mouth with both hands.

Another Variety of Tarsier

There have been unconfirmed reports of tarsiers with small scuba tanks on their backs but this may probably be attributed to this reporter's over-consumption of "tuba", the local coconut wine that is the end product of a natural fermentation of sap collected from the lopped-off tips of the growing coconut frond.

And Equally Terrifying

The cache was moved from its previous location to a much more peaceful one nearby that befits its nocturnal behavior.

A golden presidential dollar coin for the FTF.

Congratulations to Kablooey for being the first brave soul to discover the home of this fuzzy being.
