Skipping Stone Lake
This cache is 2.2 km from the Highwood Pass parking area and is
a nice spot to take a breather before tackling more serious
altitude gain if your final destination is Highwood Ridge, Grizzly
Col, Mount Tyrwitt, Pocaterra Ridge or Little Highwood Pass. The
lake is unnamed, so we have christened it Skipping Stone Lake
because the Geokids love to skip stones here. The views are lovely
as you look toward Mount Rae and Elpoca Mountain. If you listen
carefully you will hear the sedimentary rocks tumbling down off of
Highwood and Grizzly Ridges; these mountains are literally
crumbling away due to the erosional forces of wind, water and ice.
If you are lucky you will see mountain sheep, ptarmigans, and pikas
in the vicinity of the lake.
The cache is a camo’d waterproof matchbox hanging in a conifer
tree on the west side of the lake. Be sure to bring your own pen /
pencil and check the spoiler photo before you head out.
The trail appears on Gem Trek’s “Kananaskis Lakes” Trail Map and
Guide; is covered in Gillean Daffern’s “Kananaskis Country Trail
Guide" Vol. 1 and “Where Locals Hike in the Canadian Rockies” by
Kathy & Craig Copeland and is included in the Calgary
Area Trail Mapping Project trail set.
