Geocache Description:

Tuscan Springs is located near the head of Little Salt Creek, approximately nine miles east of Red Bluff. The springs were named after the similar sulfur-type springs of Tuscany in Italy by their owner, Dr. John A. Veatch, who purchased the property in 1854. Two years later, in Lake County, he discovered the first borax ever found in California, but the quantities were insufficient for commercial development.
Tuscan Springs was developed as a health resort by several owners, one of whom was Ed Walbridge, In the years1892-1912 he built a two-story hotel to accommodate 125 guests, ran a daily stagecoach from Red Bluff, and established a post office. Walbridge’s first hotel was destroyed by fire in 1899 and was replaced with a three-story hotel. From the spring waters, he developed and sold bottled mineral salts for medical purposes. A second fire in 1916 ended the days of this popular health resort. The rise and fall of Tuscan Springs was closely paralleled in many places in California in the same years.
