Hwy 508 is the main access road – travel past Calabogie Peaks 10
km. Go straight through where it intersects Centennial Lake Road –
past the Black Donald Municipal Waste Site and you are now on Hydro
Dam Road.
You will veer left (Hydro Dam Road) to cross the bridge across
the Madawaska River
and to your right you will see the Mountain Chute Dam – awesome
sight –
and to your left as you cross the bridge another gorgeous view down
the river.
Steep climb to the top of hill where there is designated parking to
unload your ATV if you choose. This point is a popular access route
into the back country on many ATV trails (also used as a snowmobile
trail in the winter). From this point you can use your gps to guide
you to the cache.
At the top of the Mountain Chute Dam
continue by vehicle or ATV following the signs to Canonto Lodge,
(you will take the left hand road at the Y) – if you take the right
fork it leads you to Norcan Lake Property Developments.
Travel past the Canonto Lodge properties, (staying left along the
way, past many homes and cottages) and you will eventually arrive
at a dead end and a public boat launch into Norcan Lake.
There is limited room but adequate to park truck and boat trailer.
Lots of areas for fishing from shore. Great site for picnic.
Centennial Lake is another of many lakes along the Madawaska River,
joining up to
Black Donald Lake and upriver from Calabogie Lake.
Centennial Lake is a manmade lake – created in 1967 – when Ontario
Hydro expropriated and flooded hundreds of acres to create the
backwaters needed to power Mountain Chute, Barret Chute, Calabogie
and Stewartville dams.
The former village of Black Donald now sits under millions of
gallons of water.
