Geocache Description:

-- THIS IS AN EARTHCACHE, READ BELOW FOR LOGGING REQUIREMENTS --

This section of the Bruce trail gives prime examples of some of the more interesting limestone rock formations that can be found all along the Niagara Escarpment.

The rocks found in this area are Dolostone, which is a type of Limestone that has high levels of Magnesium. Ruins in the area are of Lime Kilns that were built by early settlers to the area, that heated the Dolostone to make Lime Plaster, which was used as a quick acting brick mortar after it cooled and was exposed to air.

The Dolostone has porous cracks in it, allowing the settlers to mine it without as much effort. These Cracks also allow water to drain through the rock. In the winter, the water freezes and expands causing the cracks to get larger and rock features such as caves, bridges and stacks to be created. Over time, a Crack will expand to a crevice or cave, which will expand into a gully, which will eventually become the visable niagara escarpment. This process of ice erosion changes the face of the escarpment every winter.

west-to-east, and over time

Unlike the more famous sections of the niagara escarpment such as the bruce penninsula and the niagara region - This region is far removed from a large body of water making the climate seem more boreal. The winter is longer and the summers are not nearly as quick to arrive. This is the coolest region of Ontario south of Algonquin park.
