Geocache Description:

I have had trouble with the cover not being replaced securely; please make sure the cover is secure before returning the cache to its hiding location.

Welcome to the winter friendly Hardy Catalpa Geocache. The cache in located in the Dunn County Rec Park in the city of Menomonie. The above coordinates will bring you to an interesting hardwood tree known as a hardy catalpa. Check out the gallery to see various photos of the trees leaves, flowers, and bean-like pods.

The catalpa species was formerly planted because of its rapid growth and durable wood. It is also commonly planted as an ornamental for its abundant, showy blossoms and attractive foliage. These trees are very urban-tolerant. The large, rich green, heart-shaped foliage creates a beautiful contrasting texture among other trees. The beautiful white early summer blossoms turn into slender, beanlike pods that persist through winter when they eventually split to release quantities of flat fringed seeds.

The catalpa wood is durable and light brown with a satiny surface and a kerosene-like odor. It is especially well-suited for fence posts and rails, as it lasts a long time in contact with the soil and does not require a preservative treatment.
