Geocache Description:

Devil's Wall / Certova zed

English Cesky
Near Ceský Dub, approximately 5 kilometers in the north-western direction there is a rock formation, which belongs to the most valuable geological sites in the Czech Republic.

Despite its name, the Devil's wall arose by purely natural processes. In the period of the Tertiary the entire Earth including the Czech Republic was subject to frequent volcanic activity. There were many volcanic eruptions and earthquakes. The Earth's crust split and the crack that emerged was fully filled with hot basalt magma. During following million years sandstone weathered away and the whole basalt vein was discovered. Its appearance in the landscape reminded a wall.

There is also an alternative myth version of the wall's origin. There was a stake between the Devil and a farmer from nearby village Zábrdí. The farmer bet his soul that the Devil would not build a wall from Ješted to Bezdez over the night till cockerow. When it was almost sure that the farmer would lose, the farmer made a crow like a rooster and woke up all roosters in the area. The 28 kilometers long wall is what remained of the defeated Devil.

While in the past, it really was a contiguous 28 kilometers long basalt vein, now it is only a torso. We can get a partial picture of the wall's grandiosity between villages Kotel and Zábrdí. Here, the wall remains in almost original form. But only a few stone residues several meters in height remain. Also half-filled up ditches can be seen on the site. The entire area was declared a national natural monument in 1948.

People themselves are the reason for basalt vein to disappear. It was composed of high-quality durable basalt and it became fatal for it. The stone was quarried to build roads. The quarrying started during the reign of the Emperor Joseph II and continued till the beginning of the 20th century. Only in 1920 Mr. Fendrych and Mr. Havel from Svetlá pod Ještedem pointed out that the Devil's wall should be retained. They managed to enforce a ban on mining, abidance was guarded by the hanks. However, the ban was repeatedly broken until everything was urged by the Geological Survey in Beijing. The fact that the Devil's wall was described in the global scientific literature drew the attention of the Czechoslovak government. Mining was finally stopped in 1923 and the torso was secured.

The starting point to Devil's wall is a village Kotel. You should use blue-marked hiking trail, which leads just through this natural monument. The most interesting part is conserved and described on the information panel.

To log the cache you should provide me with following:
- picture of you with any part of the wall you will find interesting (should be attached to your log)
- estimate the height of the wall on given coordinates (on both sides) and send me the answer to devilswall@gmail.com. You can write your log immediately along with sending email, if there will be any problem, I will contact you via email or profile later.

I pres své jméno vznikla Certova zed výhradne prírodními procesy. V dobe Tretihor procházela celá Zeme, vcetne Ceské republiky, obdobím casté vulkanické aktivity - mnoho zemetresení a sopecných erupcí. Zemská kura praskla a vzniklá trhlina vyla vyplnena horkým cedicovým magmatem.
