Geocache Description:



At approximately 1:50 PM on August 10, 2005 the mountainsides of Spanish Fork Canyon rumbled and burst into flames when a tractor-trailer hauling nearly 18 tons of explosives took this curve on US Highway 6 too fast and tipped over.  Its fuel spilled and was ignited by the sparks made by the truck sliding on the pavement.  The driver, who was on his way to Oklahoma from Spanish Fork with 35,000 pounds of a high-grade form of TNT used for seismic exploration, managed to escape the truck before the flames spread to his payload and...

BOOM!!!


The resulting blast left a crater in the highway 70 feet across and 30 feet deep, and damaged the railroad tracks across the highway from the cache.



If you look about 150 feet to the southwest from the cache you can see where the road was repaired.  UDOT crews worked round the clock and hauled 350 loads of material fill in the crater. Due to their hard work, the highway was reopened less than 48 hours after the accident.



This road can be pretty busy, and it would be best if you stop in the pullout near the cache as you are traveling north/west on US-6.  If you're coming up the canyon, there is an easy and safe place to turn around 3.5 miles down the road near the Mill Fork Cemetery.  There's no point in turning yourself into another news story.
