"Purple Heart Highway"

The Purple Heart Memorial Highway is a nationwide memorial dedicated to the honor and memory of all combat-wounded veterans. In Indiana, State Road 1 was designated as the Purple Heart Memorial Highway. It Runs through Indiana's eastern counties from Steuben to Dearborn.

The Purple Heart dates back to General George Washington who issued the original orders describing a Badge of Military Merit, a heart fashioned from purple material and worn on the left breast.

At the close of the Revolution, Washington’s orders disappeared—for 150 years the medal and the honor that it bestowed were lost. It wasn’t until a search of records was being conducted in preparation for Washington’s bicentennial birthday celebration in 1932 that the order was rediscovered.

A new Purple Heart medal was designed specifically to honor the soldier wounded or killed in the course of combat. It is the oldest symbol and award that is still given to members of the U.S. military.

Located just off Indiana's Purple Heart Memorial Highway in Union Township, Randolph County is the Little Creek Cemetery, also called Maulsby's, The oldest known burial here dates back to 1845. it is still an active cemetery.
