The
comm
unity of Blaine Ohio was named after 1884
presidential candidate, James Gillespie Blaine.
James
Gillespie Blaine
was a
U.S.
Representative
,
Speaker of the United States House of
Representatives
,
U.S.
Senator
from
Maine
, two-time
United States Secretary of
State
, and champion of the
Half-Breeds
. He was a dominant
Republican leader of the post-Civil War period, obtaining the
1884
Republican
nomination, but lost to
Democrat
Grover
Cleveland. James Blaine
of Maine opposed the
Radical
Republican
scheme of military governments for the southern states, insisting
there be a clear path by which they could release themselves from
military rule and resume civil government. He was the first in
Congress to oppose the claim, which gained momentary and widespread
favor in 1867, that the public debt, pledged in coin, should be
paid in
greenbacks
. He took up
the cause of naturalized American citizens who, on return to their
native land, were subject to prosecution on charges of disloyalty.
His work led to the treaty of 1870 between the United States and
Britain, which placed adopted and native citizens on the same
footing.
One of
the gravesites of interest is that of a WWII Medal of
Honor Army Sergeant...
Emile Deleau,
Jr
World War II Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient.
He was killed in action. He served as a Sergeant in the United
States Army in Company A, 142d Infantry, 36th Infantry Division. He
was awarded the Medal of Honor for action on February 1-2 1945
at
Oberhoffen,
France.
His citation reads in part
"At dawn of 2 February, Sgt. Deleau pressed forward with his unit,
killing two snipers as he advanced to a point where machine-gun
fire from a house barred the way. Despite vicious small-arms fire,
Sgt Deleau ran across an open area to reach the rear of the
building, where he destroyed one machine gun and killed its two
operators with a grenade. He worked to the front of the structure
and located a second machine gun. Finding it impossible to toss a
grenade into the house from his protected position, he fearlessly
moved
away from the building
and was about to hurl his explosive when he was instantly killed by
a burst from the gun he sought to knock out. With magnificent
courage and daring aggressiveness, Sgt. Deleau cleared four
well-defended houses of Germans, inflicting severe losses on the
enemy, and at the sacrifice of his own life aided his battalion to
reach its objective with a minimum of casualties."
