Geocache Description:

Welcome to the Lekisch Memorial Garden, which commemorates Andrew Lekisch, a high school athlete who died in a mountain fall in 1987. Lovingly maintained by Andrew's family and a host of volunteer gardeners, this is one of the city's most stunningly beautiful gardens. PLEASE DO NOT ENTER ANY PORTION OF THE GARDEN TO SEARCH FOR THE CACHE!

Kincaid Park, a former Nike Missile Site deactivated in 1979, is home today to a world-class recreational complex of trails (many with lighting), a biathlon range, a chalet, a lake stocked for sportfishing (Little Campbell Lake) and a newly-constructed complex of soccer fields. More than 50 geocaches are scattered across the park's 1,400 acres of kame and kettle topography.

This cache showcases the Lekisch Memorial Garden. The Lekisch Trail complex to the south of the garden brought a grueling up and down cross-country trail into the competitive mix of trails winding their way across the park - and have helped bring world-class skiing competitions to this venue. The garden itself is built across a hillside, with stepped levels of flowers climbing and cascading over the rocks placed here to provide a foundation landscape. During the summertime it's a photographer's favorite.

The cache is a new camo preform container placed ten yards to the east of the garden, six feet above ground level, on the side of a birch tree ABOVE the bluff, completely outside the flowerbeds. Please exercise care in getting the lid back onto the preform container correctly. See the spoiler photo!

This was placed following the 2008 Fall Introduction to Geocaching Event, and was 'beta-tested' as a coordinate test by a group of field assistants at that event, using a wide variety of GPS units. Interestingly, after a quarter-hour of averaging numbers and wrangling over approach techniques, their coordinates were plus or minus 1 minor digit from the coordinates used to mark this hide.

Teri at the east end of the Garden - hide location's in sight beyond the garden ferns at left!

In August of 2008 I brought my family's aging English Setter Teri to Kincaid for one last romp across the trails before taking her final visit to the vet the next day. A picture of Teri 'pointing' a ptarmigan graces the cache page at Serenity View - one of her favorite destinations on hikes to search for game birds. We always began and ended our trail journeys here at the Lekisch Memorial Garden - a place of special memories for many Kincaid visitors, myself included.
