Looking northeast; big boulder in center
This cache is hidden atop a huge boulder that’s tumbled down off
Mt Tyrwhitt into Pocaterra Cirque. Mrs. GeoKs’ favourite place in
the world is the nearby meadow, nestled between the Cirque,
Highwood Ridge and the northeast shoulder of Pocaterra Ridge.
Standing in the meadow on a sunny day, you’re hard-pressed to hear
any traffic noise from Highway 40. This is a great spot for some
quiet introspection.
Just southwest of the base of the boulder there’s a karst-fed
creek which flows across the meadow. On our most recent hike up
this way we ate our picnic lunch atop the big rock while enjoying
the autumn colours – bright yellow larch and aspen trees,
red-leaved shrubs and golden grasses. There isn’t much cover here,
so we had to go with a waterproof matchbox container; be sure to
bring your own pen / pencil.
The trail appears on Gem Trek’s “Kananaskis Lakes” Trail Map and
Guide; is covered in Gillean Daffern’s “Kananaskis Country Trail
Guide" Vol. 1 and “Where Locals Hike in the Canadian Rockies” by
Kathy & Craig Copeland. It’s also included in the
Calgary
Area Trail Mapping Project trail set. NOTE that the terrain
rating for the hike is a 3.0, but since you have to climb the 7 or
8 meter boulder to make the find, we’ve bumped the difficulty level
for the cache to a 4.0.
