carmoli climb for cache Traditional Cache

McRover: Hola,

Geocache Description:

Not for the faint hearted, must have a fair degree of physical fitness. Not for pushchairs or wheelchairs or small children. 254ft elevation, with amazing views!

Situated on the Mar Menor between Los Alcazares and Los Urrutias, El Carmoli mountain was once owned by the military, supposedly during the Spanish Civil War. There are some very spooky and interesting tunnels dug into it that the more daring of you may wish to explore. Any information on the history of the mountain would be much appreciated! Be warned, the tunnels have been blocked up but look like they have been broken into by vandals. You will need a strong torch if you wish to explore these, and suggest you take a back up! There are many disused buildings on the side of the mountain which suggest some former military post.

The cache is situated 254 ft above sea level, on the west side of the mountain, where the slope is more gradual. From here there are some fantastic views, but if you can possibly go a bit further to the summit you can see all around the Mar Menor, nature reserve and surrounding areas!

Nearest place to park is at end of a road, N37 41.383, W000.50.787, which is at the North West corner of the site. This is very close to the El Carmoli Restaurant Bar, which is a very pleasant place to sit and relax.

We have a holiday home on the mountain, and will be checking the cache during our regular visits
