LA VIA VANDELLI Nel 18° secolo, il Granducato di Modena comprendeva
anche le città di Massa e Carrara, quindi aveva uno sbocco sul mar
Tirreno. Il duca Francesco III d'Este, volle assicurare alla città
di Modena un accesso sicuro al mare Tirreno, all'interno dei
confini del proprio ducato. Pensò allora di costruire una strada
carrabile che attraversasse l'Appennino e poi le Apuane, fino a
scendere a Massa. Del progetto fu incaricato il matematico Domenico
Vandelli da cui, poi , la strada prese il nome. Occorsero più di
dieci anni di duro lavoro, fra il 1738 e il 1751 per completare
quest'opera ardita: una strada adatta per carri e carrozze che si
inerpicava lungo i fianchi scoscesi delle montagne fino ai 1634
metri del passo Tambura. La via, impervia nel suo tracciato e
bloccata dalla neve in inverno fu però utilizzata raramente. I
banditi erano una minaccia per i viandanti che la percorrevano e
presto cadde in stato di degrado. Oggi un imponente lavoro di
restauro effettuato dal Comune di Massa e dal Parco delle Apuane ha
restituito all'antico splendore una parte del tracciato. La parte
finale verso Massa è stata utilizzata fino a poche decenni fa come
“via di Lizza” per far scendere a valle i blocchi di
marmo. Sulla strada sono infatti presenti, a intervalli regolari, i
“piri” (cilindri di legno infissi nel marmo) a cui i
“lizzatori “ fissavano i cavi di ritegno. Una volta
l’anno, nel mese di agosto, viene riproposta la
“lizzatura”, ovvero la discesa di un carico di marmo di
21 tonnellate su una slitta di legno guidata con tre cavi di
acciaio che vengono alternativamente avvolti e fatti scorrere
attorno ai “piri”. La “lizza”, ovvero il
carico di 21 tonnellate su la slitta di legno è sempre parcheggiato
e visibile dopo circa 500 metri di “via Vandelli”. La
cache si trova proprio nel piazzale dove è parcheggiata la
“lizza”. Da Massa andate verso il paese di RESCETO
(direzione Forno). Arrivati a Resceto, salite fino in cima al paese
finchè là troverete un parcheggio (vedi waypoint), dove lascerete
l’auto. Prendete a piedi la strada in salita: oltrepassata
una casa , l’asfalto finisce e comincia la
“Vandelli”. In cima alla prima salita c’è il
piazzale con la “lizza” e la cache! E’ nascosta
sotto la piattaforma coi resti di ruote “guidacavo da
taglio” sulla destra guardando la lizza. L’ambiente,
normalmente deserto, si riempie di gente nella rievocazione della
lizzatura, per cui chiediamo di RINASCONDERE BENE la cache: che non
sia visibile ( i sassi non mancano)! Trovata la cache, vi
consigliamo di percorre un tratto a vostro piacimento della
“Vandelli”. Sarà come rimettere le lancette
dell’orologio indietro di due secoli !!! Nei tratti in alto
rimanete sulla strada (semplice e ben tenuta) ed evitate di
uscirne.

THE ROUTE VANDELLI In the 18th century, the dukedom of Mantova
included also the lands of Massa and Carrara, so it had an access
to Tirreno sea. The duke “Francesco III d’Este”
wonted connect Modena to the Tirreno sea by a road completely
running in his dukedom, crossing the mountains Appennini and
Apuane, ending in Massa. The project was made by the mathematic
Domenico Vandelli, from whom the road takes the name. More than ten
years of hard work , from 1738 to 1751, were necessary to built a
road between impervious mountains and usable by carriages. But it
was not easy and safe to drive a carriage there and, during winter,
it was stopped by the snow! Bounties were present because difficult
to protect. All these things produced the abandoning of it. A very
big work of repair made by the town of Massa and the Apuane park,
gave back to the first shining a part of the track. The last part,
next to Massa, was used, until few decades ago, as way of
“lizza”, to drive down the boulders of marble. Along
the way there are, at regular distances, the “piri”,
the cylinders of wood stuck into the marble, were the
“lizzatori” (men driving the “lizza”) fit
the ropes. Once a year, in August, the descent of a sledge of 21
tons of marble (“lizzatura”) is showed. The sledge with
the 21 tons (“Lizza”) is visible all the year from 500
meters the beginning of “Vandelli”. The cache is there,
in the place of “lizza”. From the town of MASSA, drive
yours car to the village of RESCETO (on the way to FORNO). Arrive
at the end of the village (always rising) until you arrive at a car
park (see waypoint). Leave there your car and take the road rising:
after a house the asphalt disappears and the “route
Vandelli” begins! A the top of the first climb you will find
the “lizza”. The cache is under the platform with old
wheels (for cutting wires) on the right side of the place, looking
to the sledge. The place is normally desert but, once a year,
during the day of “lizzatura”, is full of people, so,
HIDE VERY WELL the cache: it must be not visible! Found the cache,
we suggest you continue on the route, for the distance you like,
and you will fill that the hands of your watch went back of two
centuries !!! In the high part walk on the road (easy and well
kept) and do not get out!
