Nicholas Lake
|
The cache is hidden in the natural boulder dam that forms one side of Nicholas Lake in Leo Carrillo State Park.
The Nicholas Flat area is beautiful with meadows, oak forests and a small year-round lake. There aren't many traditional caches there so I'm trying to help rectify that.
Access is from the Nicholas Flat trailhead at the end of Decker School Road. Follow this link for detailed descriptions of the trails in the area, including GPS tracks and elevation profiles.
To find the cache, hike south past the lake to the boulders that form a natural dam. Don't follow the marshy path that goes through the bullrushes next to the lake; there's an easier route that goes inland a few dozen yards before turning back to the south end of the lake.
The trail to the boulder dam is well travelled and the boulders have lots of paths between them, but it will take a little rock hopping to get to the cache. Don't hop too vigorously, though, because there's quite a drop on the far side of the dam! It provides a good view of the coast, though.
This cache has been muggled a few times, so I've had to hide it better. It's covered by a few small rocks. Look in the gallery for two closer pictures of it. When I replaced it in July 2014, there was some graffiti on the rocks a few feet away.
