Geocache Description:

[RO]Drumul primei cai ferate romane traverseaza raul Arges. A fost odata si un pod.

[EN]On the path of the first railway lies the river Arges and once there was a bridge, too.

Calea ferata traverseaza raul intre Falastoaca si Gradistea.

[EN] The first railway in Romania connected Bucharest (Filaret station) with Giurgiu, a port city on the Danube, to the south, in the year 1869.

Since then, Filaret station was transformed into an inter-urban bus station, but the railway, now connected in the south of the capital near Jilava, Berceni and Bucuresti Progresu, still exists, and was in use until 2005.

Grand plans to bring shipping to the capital, by transforming the lower part of the river Arges from the Danube up to Mihailesti into a navigation lane fell short with the fall of the regime in 1989. A large reservoir known as "lacul Mihailesti" was completed and a partially built dock a little to the south.
Further south lies the high road bridge at "Adunatii Copaceni", built so high to allow ships below to pass, though ships have yet to pass below it.

The railway passes between Falastoaca and Gradistea. A new, high bridge's construction has started a long time ago, and was never finished, the main span and pilons already in disrepair.
The old bridge lies beneath it, one pilon leaning towards the river and the souther span fallen.
Many small enterprises extract ballast from the riverbed and surrounding land and some blame them for extracting ballast right from near the bridge itself, which caused it to collapse in 2005. Fortunately, AFAIK nobody was hurt.

Today no trains come this way.

Nearby, to the south-west lies the wild life preserve of "Comana", forrest and a lake on the river Neajlov. (visit link)
