Geocache Description:

CACHE IS NOT AT THE LISTED LOCATION BUT IS AT N44°AB.CDE W89°FG.HIJ

Anybody who's spent any time in Point as a student or transient knows this corner all too well. It is the hub of nightlife. The nexus of the bar-hop, and neither I nor my older brothers are strangers to either. I find it interesting and mildly amusing that these arguably wise faces from the past look down upon, and perhaps keep a weary eye on, the adolescent antics that unfold on a nightly basis below.

There are many recognizable faces here. Form the Great and Powerful Oz, Wizard of all things Trivia, to the current owner of the Elbow Room (arguably my most favored Point hang-out) to the iconic Veteran and former owner of Joe's, Roger Stroik, who's son Sean now runs the place. It reminds me of just how intrinsically tied the past our present is.

To bring this mural to life and help fund the project, community leaders and business owners were offered an opportunity to have themselves or loved ones immortalized here on this very visible and centrally located downtown mural.

"In total there are 135 faces (I think). It took one whole summer to complete (mid May- end of August 2006) working about 45-48 hours a week plus about 100 hours of prep time prior to the start of the project. The piece is drawn from a well known 1910 post card featuring a crowd scene at Stock Fair Day on The Square. My understanding is that one day a week people would bring their livestock to be auctioned off. It was a great piece for the people of Stevens Point; many of the submissions were of departed loved ones and .... Average Joes."-Kelly Meredith

Kelly Meredith paints town murals and lives in Butternut. As a child, she loved arts and crafts & the thrill of making something with her own hands. She attended high school in Milwaukee, where she was a math and science geek and only took one art class. She went on to attend the University of Wisconsin to pursue veterinary studies. In Madison, she took a few night courses in Art, to break up the grind of too many calculus and chemistry courses. Those night courses taught her that drawing and painting were actually learnable, teachable skills, not the genetic gifts she’d always assumed them to be. Eventually she switched majors and in 1986, she earned a degree in Art Education. While teaching, she painted her first professional mural in Ashland. In 2003, she left her teaching career to pursue art full time. She has completed over thirty murals and most of her work can be seen in Stevens Point & Ashland, Wisconsin . She even has a series of three jungle scenes in Belize, Central America.

Your job is to locate a few of these Average Joes and use the last number of their identifier to solve the puzzle. The Joes you need are identified in the following conversation I had with my brothers and Roger one morning, so many moons ago, after a heavy night of misanthropy. (Rodger, you are dearly missed!).

RODGER: "What'll ya have, boys?"
JEFFEÉ: "Shots of Soju, pour one for you too."
RODGER: "Ummm...Little early for rice liquor, isn't it?"
ANDRÜE: "Whattza matta you, feelin whippy?"
RODGER: "Well no. You boys hanging with Don Johnson last night or something?"
JEFFEÉ: "Na, just a little hair of the dog, Rodge! C'mom, racetrack's only 5 miles long... duda ,duda."
ME: "More like 20... felt like a hound after a fox last night, chasin you guys round town."
ANDRÜE: "Roger doger, and you looked like a fox too. You were lookin pretty beet all night."
JEFFEÉ: "For shore, your eyes were blood red and dilated and it looks like they're gonna stay that way all day!"
ME: "Alright, gimme the shot already, more sopa for my eyes..."
RODGER: "I wouldn't call Soju an herbal remedy, exactly, least nor for you eyes.
JEFFEÉ: "Hey, a shot and a beer is good medicine, and A-okray by me, any day of the week!"
