Geocache Description:

If you are an animal lover you should add this one to your “to do” list. The cache will take you on a short walking tour of the Pine Ridge Cemetery in Dedham. Visit some famous animals and see how owners have paid tribute to their pets. Although there are several stages, the area is small and the cache can be located in under an hour.

The coordinates listed above are for the parking area just beyond the red barn on the UPPER level. There is also a red barn near the new cemetery at the bottom of the hill, but this isn't where you want to go. Go in the entrance and take a right up the hill, go past the house and continue up the hill and park just past the upper barn.

Pine Ridge Cemetery is the oldest pet cemetery in the country that is owned and operated by an animal welfare agency. Pine Ridge, located at 238 Pine Street, is adjacent to the Animal Rescue League’s (ARL) of Boston’s Dedham Animal Care and Adoption facility at 55 Anna’s Place. In addition to the present-day cemetery, Pine Ridge also includes an historical section with burials dating back to the early 1900’s that is open to the public when the Rescue League is open.

While walking through this cemetery we noticed that many animals had double letters in their name. We have created a tour that will take geocachers to some of the headstones of these pets. At each stop cachers need to observe what double letters occur in the animal’s name as listed on their headstone.

TOUR: (We suggest that you take it in the order listed. If you set your GPS to "Find by Name" the reference points will be listed in the correct order for the tour.)

Double letter
Letter C

42° 15.878 071° 11.147

Find a headstone shaped like an iceberg. Admiral Richard Byrd's toy fox terrier is buried here. The dog accompanied Bryd to the base camp at both the North and South Pole.

Letter B

42° 15.919 071° 11.201

Chester and Jean Peck had a likeness of their pet pug carved into his dark colored headstone.

Letter J

42° 15.930 071° 11.211

Locate the plaque dedicated to a noble steed "graced with poise and stoutheartedness."

Letter A

42° 15.924 071° 11.228

Over by the little tree you will find a pet who lived from 1955 to 1967. "She was a good dog."

Letter F

42° 15.897 071° 11.222

This headstone with a rounded top is tilting forward a bit. Bend down and look for a picture of the owners "beloved" pet who has the same name as a Greek hero.

Letter I

42° 15.876 071° 11.207

In a row of 4 headstones between the two huge trees you will find this grave of an animal that only lived from 1932 - 1937.

Letter D

42° 15.844 071° 11.178

All alone in the corner, you will find a replica of the Borden family headstone in Fall River. "Lizzy Borden took an axe and gave her mother forty whacks and when she saw what she had done she gave her father forty-one." Lizzy was eventually acquitted of the murder. Her dogs are buried here. The first name of one of them fits the theme of this cache.

Letter G

42° 15.857 071° 11.186

A man who once conducted the Boston Symphony Orchestra and was considered by many to be one of the great classical music conductors of all time, buried his dog here by the double trunked tree. He and his dog share the same Russian last name that contains the double letters. His dog lived from 1924-1936.

Letter E

42° 15.852 071° 11.161

Look along an outcropping of ledge for a bronze marker that has turned blue with age. On it poet and author, Le Baron Cooke, had inscribed, "I know love; I had a dog." [GPS reception is difficult here. Go about 40' behind the semi circle of stones.]

Letter H

42° 15.879 071° 11.189

This tomb with its metal door was moved to Pine Ridge in its entirety from an estate owned by R.H. White, owner of a large department store in Boston. The outside of the tomb is made of Roxbury puddingstone and the inside is made of white marble.

Note: We take our coordinates by waiting until the GPS settles. If the headstone you are looking for is not immediately apparent, take some time and let the GPS settle.

Permission to place a cache on the property has been given by the Director. The cache is loaded with animal related items. Geocachers should feel free to leave any kind of swag, however.

Although the area is open when there is snow on the ground, some of the headstones will be hard to find with snow covering the writing on them. The final is only "somewhat" snow friendly!"

You can validate your puzzle solution with certitude.
