Geocache Description:

Standard Cache at historic battlement.

Battery Steele is an abondoned military bunker that held two sixteen inch canons and various other installations for the defense of Portland Maine Harbor. The harbor was the headquarters for the north atlantic naval fleet during WW1 and WW2. This deep water harbor had ancorages for dozens of the largest naval ships of the time.

A 600 foot long tunnel with various rooms connects the two canon encasements. Careful observation will reveal details of operation of the guns. Ammo storage rooms and a long recesssed track on the walls were used for moving the 2700lb shells. You can still find remnents of living quarters, toilet facilities and air vents. Bring good shoes and flashlight.

The property is now a Nature/land preserve.

The cache was lost probably due to area cleaning early June 2010. Cache replaced Sept 2010. Pictures from original camera uploaded.
