A straightforward, easy-to-find cache near the village of Wendens Ambo in north-west Essex. There is a small parking space at the start of the public footpath - take care not to obstruct the gateway. Access is along a farm track, which may be a bit muddy in winter, but I promise - no nettles! There is a WWII pillbox nearby.
The name Wendens Ambo is almost as picturesque as the village itself - 'ambo' means 'both' and it refers to the joining of the parishes of Great and Little Wendens in 1662. After finding the cache, if you carry on along the footpath and then turn left down another track, you will arrive in the village, where there is an attractive Norman church with an adjacent row of pretty cottages. I can recommend the Bell, which is a lovely traditional pub with a large garden, serving real ale and good food. Well-behaved dogs are allowed in the bar.
Also nearby is Audley End house (English Heritage) which is well worth a visit. If you are coming along the B1383 from the north, you will get a splendid view of the mansion on your left.
The cache contains:
Log Book + Pen
Glitter tealight
Box of paperclips
Joke car scratch (ha, ha, someone will have fun with this!)
Snake
Mini cookie jar
Nail polish
Angel of the North geocoin
