The place - a park in the city center established in memory of Chiyune Sugihara (1900-1986), the Japanese consul in Lithuania during the World War II.
Even though the danger of war threatened his own life, he continued issuing visas for Jewish refugees thus saving them from death. When asked why he risked his career to save other people, he quoted an old samurai saying: "Even a hunter cannot kill a bird which flies to him for refuge". In 2001, Waseda University from Japan erected a monument in recognition of his achievements, and many japanese cherry-trees (sacuras) were also planted to represent the hope that academic exchange and friendly relationship between the Republic of Lithuania and Japan will deepen and blossom.
So after a short introduction on cultural aspects, let's focus on the goal of the hunt - the cache, which will make you think a bit, so an important requirement is an IQ higher than 70 :)
The given coordinates are for the statue that was described above, before getting there a few tasks are needed to be fulfilled:
The cache coordinates are:
N 54 41.XYZ
E 025 16.WZ
X : The story of sacuras (japanese cherry-trees). The sacuras were donated to Lithuania by Japan, and the initial amount of trees goes up to more than 200. The majority of them were scattered around the city of Vilnius, just a few trees traveled to Kaunas and settled down next to the former Japanese consulate. How many? This is the X value.
Y : The easy part, you can do it once you arrive at the park. Count the number of swallows arising from the hand of the statue, it makes an Y.
Z : Chiyune Sugihara was a straight man, consequently he had a wife and a few sons. But like most of the men who never are happy with only one woman, Sugihara switched the wives as well. Sugihara's life wasn't pure happiness - one of the son's had died :( The amount of total wives and kids (except for the one who died) comes to the Z code.
W : The hardest part, but the internet does make it easy. The address (building number, to be more precise) of the former Japanese Consulate in Kaunas, where Chiyune Sugihara had been working, and to where several sacuras were delivered. Now that place is turned into a memorial museum for Ch. Sugihara.
I honestly believe that after knowing and figuring all this out you will be a proud and sophisticated visitor of the place, who knows the meaning and realizes the importance of it! :)
