Okay…some itty-bitty facts about Lake Don Pedro:
Lake Don Pedro is not part of the Hetch Hetchy Water and Power
system, but water in that system flows in tunnels under the upper
end of this lake. The San Fransisco Public Utilities Commission
provided about 45% of the funds for construction of the 1971 New
Don Pedro Dam and so has the right to store 570,000 acre feet of
water in this reservoir. Each year, San Francisco takes about
230,000 acre feet. However, the rights of the Modesto and Turlock
Irrigation District are senior to those of San Francisco’s; in dry
years MID and TID can draw down the reservoir to meet their own
needs before providing water to San Fransisco.
And…just to make you a bit smarter; the 5 largest artificial
lakes in California are:
· 4.55 million acre feet (5.61 km³) Lake Shasta
· 3.54 million acre feet (4.37 km³) Lake Oroville
· 2.45 million acre feet (3.02 km³) Trinity Lake
· 2.42 million acre feet (2.99 km³) New Melones Lake
· 2.03 million acre feet (2.50 km³) Lake Don Pedro
