Geocache Description:

This cache is placed in honor of Sears Catalog Homes.

For those of you who do not know what Sears Catalog Homes are, here’s a little background:

Between 1908 and 1940, Sears Roebuck and Company sold ready-to-assemble houses, through the mail. The house kits were shipped by railway. These kits included all the materials needed to build an exceptionally sturdy and well designed house. Most of these homes were assembled by the new homeowner and friends, relatives, and neighbors. Sears houses were known for their craftsmanship.

Sears also helped to popularize the latest technology available to house buyers in the early part of the twentieth century. Some new developments that were incorporated in the house design included central heating, indoor plumbing, and electricity. Sears offered 447 different house models throughout the program’s 32 year history. Unfortunately, due to the Great Depression, the Sears Catalog House program ended in 1940.

McHenry County Historical Society recognizes Sears houses to be a significant part of our cultural history. There are many other Sears Homes in our county and city to enjoy. By learning more, you will be able to distinguish these houses in other towns, throughout the country, as well.

This cache has permission to be placed on the property. The owners were very considerate to let us place the cache, if you see them feel free to smile and wave. You may see a golden four-legged friend who enjoys watching over the area, she is quite friendly and harmless, so don’t be alarmed.

This is a quick find if you think like a cacher. There is no need to move off the walkway, for this one is in reach. DO NOT CROSS ONTO THE PROPERTY OF THE RED HOUSE. Muggles are around quite frequently, so try to be stealthy. I wouldn’t suggest searching for this cache during nighttime. This cache is big enough to fit smaller TB’s and trading items. Bring your own scribbler. Gold Coin for the FTF!

If you want an extra hint, for visualization, I would suggest looking up "The Willard" model.

Once again DO NOT GO ONTO THE PROPERTY OF THE RED HOUSE and you DO NOT HAVE TO LEAVE THE SIDEWALK!!!!

Good Luck and Have Fun!!!
