Geocache Description:

Ph(F)auna Phenomenon

Love them or hate them , Flying Foxes have lived in this area for over 40 Years to my knowledge. The bats in the nearby mangroves are Black Flying Foxes (Pteropus Alecto )for most of the year. Around Christmas there is a huge influx of Little Red Flying Foxes (Pteropus Scapulatus )as they follow the blossoming of Eucalypts, Melaleucas and Paperbarks. The best time of day to visit is on dusk as the colony leaves en masse to feed. They travel at 25-30 KPH and cover a radius of up to 50 K. A spectacular site when viewed with a setting sun backdrop. Enjoy the spectacle and the smell. Micro so bring a writing stick.Stay clear of the busy road.
