Don't Shoot the Messenger - Fairbairn Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Ngaambul: As there's been either no response from the cache owner, no cache to find or log to sign, or it's been a number of months since the last owner note. I'm archiving it to keep it from continually showing up in search lists, and to prevent it from blocking other cache placements. If you wish to repair/replace/make available the cache sometime in the near future (next 30 days), just contact us (by email), and assuming it meets the current guidelines, we'll be happy to unarchive it. Should you replace the cache after 30 days has passed please create a new cache listing so it can be reviewed as a new cache.

Geocache Description:

Fairbairn Dragway closed down. Please don't shoot the messenger. This is a magnetic nano so please bring your own pen to sign log and replace exactly as found.

The sport of drag racing began in the ACT in 1976 on a disused portion of Pialligo Avenue adjacent to the eastern boundary of the Canberra airport. The site was temporary and available to the drag racers under a licence agreement.

The Canberra Drag Racers Club (CDRC) was formed in 1980 and secured a 10-year lease for the block in 1988. Drag racing activities ceased in 1989 due to an urgent need to improve safety and to develop the site.

In 1992, Canberra International Dragway Management (CIDM) was formed and carried out the required improvements, having gained a licence to control the facility from the CDRC. Racing recommenced in December of that year and continued until the expiration of the CDRC lease in December 1998. No legal drag racing has occurred in the ACT since then.

In August 2004 the ACT government released a report titled "A summary of options for a dragway in the ACT region" as a basis for future decisions about the dragway, although to date there has been no final resolution on whether Canberra will get a new dragway at Majura or anywhere else.

The drag strip has been fenced off but you can still see what remains of it from Glenora Drive. At the GZ pull over into a small area near the end of the fence and start your search there.

If security do come past, you can tell them that you have come to see the only dragway in the ACT and you can then ask them what the government is likely to do with it (distraction is often a good tactic). Then stretch, bend down (replace cache if you need to), stand up and back into/onto mode of transport, wishing Security a G'Day before heading off to another cache .
