Interesting information posted by a cache finder:
This "engine" is a large portable Soda Acid Fire Extinguisher on
wheels. The container was filled part way with water and baking
soda. A cylinder with sulphuric acid was placed in the top. The
"engine was pushed, dragged to where the fire was, leaned over on
it's top (side) and the lever on the top was squeezed, breaking the
sulphuric acid container. The acid would mix with the soda water
making CO2 which would cause pressure inside the container and push
(squirt) the water out. Pretty simple system. These extinguishers
were built in the early 1900's. Badger Fire Extinguisher Company is
still existence, although I'm not sure if they're still headquarted
in Boston.
