Zombie Info:

A zombie is a reanimated human corpse. Stories of zombies originated in the Afro-Caribbean spiritual belief system of Vodou, which told of the people being controlled as workers by a powerful sorcerer. Zombies became a popular device in modern horror fiction, largely because of the success of George A. Romero's 1968 film Night of the Living Dead.

There are several possible etymologies of the word zombie. One possible origin is jumbie, the West Indian term for "ghost". Another is nzambi, the Kongo word meaning "spirit of a dead person." According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, the etymology is from the Louisiana Creole or Haitian Creole zonbi, of Bantu origin. A zonbi is a person who is believed to have died and been brought back to life without speech or free will. It is akin to the Kimbundu nzúmbe ghost. These words are approximately from 1871.

Modern zombies, as portrayed in books, films, games, and haunted attractions, are quite different from both voodoo zombies and those of folklore. Modern zombies are typically depicted in popular culture as mindless, unfeeling monsters with a hunger for human flesh, a prototype established in the seminal 1968 film Night of the Living Dead. Typically, these creatures can sustain damage far beyond that of a normal, living human and can pass whatever syndrome that causes their condition onto others.

Usually, zombies are not depicted as thralls to masters, as in the film White Zombie or the spirit-cult myths. Rather, modern zombies are depicted in mobs and waves, seeking either flesh to eat or people to kill or infect, and are typically rendered to exhibit signs of physical decomposition such as rotting flesh, discolored eyes, and open wounds, and moving with a slow, shambling gait. They are generally incapable of communication and show no signs of personality or rationality, though George Romero's zombies appear capable of learning and very basic levels of speech as seen in the films Day of the Dead and Land of the Dead.

Modern zombies are closely tied to the idea of a zombie apocalypse, the collapse of civilization caused by a vast plague of undead. The ideas are now so strongly linked that zombies are rarely depicted within any other context.

There are still significant differences among the depictions of zombies by various media; for one comparison see the contrasts between zombies by Night of the Living Dead authors George A. Romero and John A. Russo as they evolved in the two separate film series that followed. Source: www.wikipedia.com

The Traditional Zombie:

The Traditional Zombie is a reanimated human that shuffles and moans and is unable to move properly. Usually very aggressive, but not very fast. From these observations alone, one cannot make safe assumptions about it's behavior or the origin of its condition. Origins include but are not limited to Voodoo ritual, experiments gone wrong, mysterious comet's.

It's worth mentioning that the absence of such a moaning sound in the area does not guarantee that the location is devoid of zombie activity. The typical zombie is easily dispatched with an accurately placed bullet to the head or strong blunt impact. Destroying the legs or other limbs is relatively ineffective, but in a pinch, can be a good way to buy some time to escape.

The Infected Zombie:

Infected Zombie's are reanimated through a means that can be partially (or superficially) explained by an existing scientific concept. Most frequently, this is by way of a virus. They are the most common types of zombies, featured in many games, movies and novels. They are technically living infected and not zombies. As such, they are able to run very fast.

Infected Zombie's condition is usually contagious. Through a bite, or contact with an infected's blood or other body fluids. This makes dealing with this type of Zombie extra dangerous!

The Unique Zombie:

Just as humans are diverse and varied, so too are zombies - consider the possibilities of what might happen when some of the rare, superhuman individuals of our society turn into zombies. Take, for example, the man who survives several gunshot wounds to the head, on account of a genetic propensity for extremely thick cranial bones - such an individual would make a formidable zombie. Stay alert, don't assume all zombies are alike, and you might be able to survive the zombie apocalypse.

There are also variations of these three classifications. For example, Animal Zombie's, Child Zombie's, Techno (Cybernetic) Zombie's, and even Alien Zombie's!

Zombie Defense Part 1; Base of Operations:

Successful survivors are advised to make careful choices when choosing a base of operations. Defensibility, food stores, availability of improvised weapons, and proximity to resources such as gun shops and liquor stores are all factors that can make a given locale a successful or poor choice for long-term habitation.

Food and water: Recent changes to the recommended intake suggest 2,900 calories for men, and 2,320 for women. You need about 4 litres (1 gallon) of water a day. Health and security: You need to avoid being injured or sick, and avoid attacks from Zombie's if possible. Shelter and warmth: There is a common survival rule called "The Rule of Three", which says that you can survive 3 weeks without food, 3 days without water, but only 3 hours of exposure (heat or cold). Typically, cold is the bigger killer.
