Short Walk from Canal Foot, Ulverston or Plumpton Hall.
The earliest reference to iron ore mining in Furness is in fact at Plumpton found in a grant by William of Lancaster (1220-1246) to the Prior of Conishead.
Originally the ore would have been at or near the surface. Later over time the pits were deepened and expanded.
The ore was trapped in veins in the carboniferous limestone rock in varying widths from a few cm to many meters
Great Pit Spring Wood was the biggest but is now filled with water disguising its size however the water is at least 40ft deep and there were three levels cut at varying depths from the pit.
Have a walk around the cache site and imagine these early miners extracting the first ore from Furness.
