Geocache Description:

This Letterbox-Hybrid cache is dedicated to the reminiscence and admiration of Roseville's early dwellers.  It is part of a series of caches called:    CACHE OUT IN ROSEVILLE

Before 1961, Roseville’s eastern limits ended at the intersection of Douglas Blvd and Folsom Road (just west of the shopping center).  The completion of the Roseville Community Hospital (1962), Folsom Dam (1955), and Interstate 80 (1956) extended the community to the east.  With this eastward movement, the businesses along Vernon Street would gradually decline.

The single most important addition to Roseville’s expanding business district since the mid-1920’s was Roseville Square Shopping Center.  Construction commenced in 1961.  This was going to be a very modern shopping center for its time.  A pioneer cemetery was carefully moved to make room for Roseville Square.  However, a Native American burial ground nearby was not accorded the same respect and is now resting, we hope, in peace, under some nearby houses.   This letterbox-hybrid,   $HOP ‘TIL YOU DROP!   pays tribute to this little bit of history.

STAGE #1 :

Go to the beginning coordinates, located in the parking lot of Roseville Square Shopping Center.  Find the tree with the white rock embedded in it up where the tree branches out.   The coordinates used to be written in reverse on top of the rock and you needed a mirror to get the coordinates for the next stage.   Now the tree has grown so much around the rock that there is not enough room to write the coordinates on it anymore.    So now the coordinates to Stage #2 are written on another rock, hidden just down from the white rock on the south side of the tree, which is covered with rosemary.    Stage #2 is approximately .4 miles away, as the crow flies.

STAGE #2 :

  • At the new location, walk northwest along the cement path, past the playground on your  left.
  • Continue on the asphalt path to the entrance of the cement slides on your left.   If you feel adventurous enough, grab some cardboard and slide on down.   Also recommended for the fastest slide – a big square of waxed paper.
  • One way or another, make your way to the bottom of the slides.  There are three choices to get down to the bottom:   1)   Walk down the steps just to the right of the slides, 2)   Walk down the asphalt ramp just past the slides, or 3)   Go down the slides.
  • Once you are down on the lower level, head for the basketball court.
  • Locate the half-line on the basketball court.  Go to that spot on the side closest to the path you came in on.
  • Now you will cross the asphalt path and will be heading in a NE direction.  You can see white housing up on the hill.
  • In front of you is a grassy area (higher in the spring time, lower in the dryer seasons).
  • Head thru the grasses, passing three trees on your left.
  • You are looking for a downed tree log with the cache hidden under it.  Zero in on an orange piece of metal sticking out of the ground.   Cache is right next to that . . . . hidden under bark.

Exchange stamp images and sign the log.   If you don’t have a stamp, just draw a picture.   Bring your own pen/pencil.  Do not take the stamp as a trading item.   Please conceal the cache well.  Thanks for visiting!

NOW WHAT WOULD YOU RATHER BE DOING . . . . .      SHOPPING OR GEOCACHING????
