Geocache Description:

Along Vichey Springs Road, you can pull off just past the cache and make your way carefully on this busy road...Your lookin for a Benchmark no doubt! Ane yep- You can log it!

Here you are again on yet another section of the fault...The center of the Ukiah Valley Mayacma Fault and you may be wondering if this thing is actually active or not...Well Proof is in the pudding as far as I can see, as you park and make your way to the cache you can clearly see Earths Movement in action right there in the middle of the road. (N39* 09.701 W123* 10.965) I havent been told that its not settling or normal use, but just so happens to be right where we're claiming lies the fault. Check it out...seems like quite a bit of movement to me.

As far as activity goes for this fault...goes, yep its active! As already stated in another cache the plates creep at a rate of 6.6mm a year, which doesnt sound like much. However, the
Mayacma Fault Zone is considered capable of generating a M7.1 earthquake by the USGS in 2006. Currently, the probability of a large earthquake on the MFZ has not been determined.
However, recent investigations along the fault in the Ukiah area indicate that the last earthquake generated by the fault which caused surface rupture occurred between 1410 and 1660 A.D. Recent evidence of the seismic activity on the Mayacma Fault Zone was the occurrence of two M4.0 earthquakes (with epicenters
approximately 9 miles southeast of Ukiah) in December 2001!
