The Sloat's Dam brought industry to this area along the Ramapo
River. This Mill pond, Dam, Control gates and Millrace were built
by Isaac Sloat before 1792 to provide water power for a Sawmill and
Tannery. It was next utilized by son, Jacob Sloat in the early
1800's to power a cotton textile mill. Originally built as a stone
dam, with the invention of Portland cement in the late 1800's, it
was rebuilt and reinforced, continuing to serve the Sloat mill as a
power source until 1914, when electricity came to the village of
Sloatsbug.
