Geocache Description:

The 500ml tub is hidden on the western shore of Loch Garbad on the Isle of Arran. The walk to the loch is on a well made path through coniferous woodland, passing the Eas Mor (Big Waterfall), with amazing views south over the island of Pladda to Ailsa Craig. The distance is around 6km and will probably take a couple of hours.

Loch Garbad means the loch of the rough place, but legend has it that the hollow to the west of  Cnoc na Garbad was not always such a quiet lonely place. Back in the days when Arran owed allegiance to the Lord of the Isles on Islay, and then to his overlord the King of Norway this little glen was known widely for its ceilidhs and parties. In those days giants lived here too and one of them, Skorri by name, lived to the north of here in the valley that takes his name, Glen Scorrodale. Today Glen Scorrodale, on the Ross Road, is a quiet place where Buddhist monks have a retreat house but in those days the giant Skorri was constantly being disturbed by the loud music and and sounds of partying coming over the hillside from Garbad. One Hogmanay the folk at Garbad were celebrating so loudly that they woke Skorri and in a rage he strode over the mountainside and digging his great hands into the ground he heaved the village of Garbad into the sea leaving a great scar where the village had been. And so if you look closely we will see that there is a strange similarity between the shape of Loch Garbad and the island of Pladda where the village that Skorri tore from the earth had landed with a great splash!
