Geocache Description:

A small sized Cache situated on Chun Downs approximately midway along the footpath between Chun Castle and Chun Quoit, commanding extensive views.

Parking can be found at Trehyllys Farm at N50.08.769 and W005.37.727, and then you take the path indicated by the large white painted rock up to the summit.

Chun Castle is an Iron-Age Hill Fort constructed in the 3rd and 2nd Centuries BC and probably occupied both before and after the Roman occupation of Britain. The Castle measures 280ft in diameter with ancient stone walls of up to 9ft high, although much of the original stone was taken to pave the streets of Penzance. There are traces of hut foundations within the walls, and a blocked-up Well. Also several small smelting pits were discovered in 1925, one containing a 12lb piece of tin, suggesting that the Cornish Tin Industry has been in existence for at least 2000 years. There is an entrance to the South West flanked by 2 large stone gate posts and these are directly aligned with Chun Quoit.

Chun Quoit is one of the best preserved burial chambers in West Penwith and dates from Neolithic times. It stands at a height of approx 6ft and consists of 4 upright slabs topped by a massive square capstone. 4000 years separates the builders of these two monuments.

The Cache is sympathetically hidden to make finding easy, with no need to dislodge or disrupt either of these Monuments.
