Geocache Description:

A small drive-by cache with a log and pencil and a few small trinkets. It can probably accommodate small trackables. The cache site provides a view of Wallington Hall.

Wallington Hall was built in 1688 by the architect Daniel Garret on the foundations of a pele tower originally occupied by the Fenwicks. The Hall was built for Sir William Blackett who had made his fortune through coal and shipbuilding in the Tyneside area. The house was altered by Sir Walter Calverley Blackett during the 18th century. The grounds were partially laid out by Lancelot “Capability” Brown. The four dragons’ heads that stand on the lawn in front of the house came from Bishops Gate, London, possibly as ballast on one of the Blackett’s colliers. In 1777, the Wallington estate passed to the Trevelyn family who are probably best known through three distinguished historians: G.M.Trevelyn, George Otto Trevelyn and George Macaulay Trevelyn. Many of the changes made to the hall during the Trevelyns' occupation were influenced by John Ruskin Since 1942 Wallington Hall, and its grounds, have been in the custodianship of the National Trust. The house and grounds are open for most of the year and details of the opening hours may be obtained through the National Trust website.
