Geocache Description:

There are some steps that may or may not be needed, reason for the terrain rating. Believe most all can do cache

Here by the city of Astoria in Oregon, there’s a small cemetery near Warrenton where you will find many Civil War solders laid to rest. Seems there are 27 head stones from the Civil War Vets, they are easy to see, most are off white with a shield out lining their name and other information. Many fought for four long years then left the east coast for a better life in the west. One such solider is my Grandmother’s uncle, Michael Sharp. He was born in December 1836, worked in a Tobacco shop that his family owned in downtown New York City. When the war came along he volunteered in the New York Militia and was shipped to Washington D.C. to protect the White House and the Federal Capital from General Lee and his troop’s right next door in Virginia. Many of the men wanted to be involved in the war on the front lines or they were going to return to New York. The orders then came and they left to join the GAR, Grand Army of the Republic, in Pennsylvania. The New York group was assigned to Company B and saw battle at Bull Run, Vicksburg, and Gettysburg. Photobucket New York 82nd monument at Gettysburg. There in Gettysburg they were on the spot where Pickett of the Confederacy led his men in a charge right into the Union’s line. They were there also there when Grant took Richmond which ended the war that split the Union for years to come. After four long years of war he returned to New York to find his family had closed the Tobacco store. So Michael chose to move on. He left on a wagon train with his brother-in-law for Oregon. Here near Astoria, he with his family farmed 160 acres till his death at age 67. He was laid to rest on February 24th 1904 at Ocean View Cemetery The cemetery has many veterans from the Civil War buried around the hill with the flag. This flag was raised in 1937. The placket reads: “In memory of our fathers and all U.S. Veterans. Dedicated July 4, 1937 by Astoria Sons and Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War 1861 – 1865.
