Geocache Description:

The cache is based on a famous story relating to Henry Baylis whom was a Wagga Wagga Police Magistrate in the year 1863.The story involves an encounter between Baylis and notorious bushranger Dan Morgan and the lucky bullet. Later the main Street of Wagga Wagga was named in his honour and now a cache placed to mark the significance.Pictured below is Henry Baylis in 1863 as Wagga Police Magistrate.

The story began on August 21st 1863, as he was caught by bushrangers Dan Morgan and associate Clark whilst delivering documents to Urana by horse. They fired a volley of shots at Baylis whilst all riding horses but missed. The bushrangers caught Baylis but were disappointed to find he had on him only 3 shillings and a cheque for two pounds. They asked what his profession was and he notified them he was Police Magistrate of Wagga.Morgan stated he was impressed by his courage and let him go.Baylis claimed he would return to do his duty with backup. The bushrangers claimed they would be ready for any attack.

Only a few days later Baylis returned to the
Urana area with a party of police and volunteers and found the bushrangers campsite not far from Lockhart.Pictured below is bushranger Dan Morgan.

In a "stand-off" of gunshots from both sides Morgan was unhurt. He escaped to Victoria and was later shot dead at Wangaratta on April 11th,1865.His associate Clarke was fatally wounded and Baylis also wounded with a bullet logged in his chest.Baylis returned to Wagga and had the bullet removed and kept it, but was dangerously ill for some time.He was greatly attached to the bullet which he then permanently wore in a gold locket on his watch chain.

In 1875 the NSW government awarded Baylis the Gold Medal from the colony of NSW for his efforts of tracking down the bushrangers.Pictured below is a picture of the actual "lucky bullet" which is held in The Museum of the Riverina ,Wagga Wagga, together with the Gold Medal and other mementoes as a permanent exhibition.
Baylis later retired in 1896 to Parramatta ,Sydney.Ironically, whilst he was walking across railway tracks at Homebush,he was struck by a train and died soon afterwards.

Morgan later became known as "Mad Dog Morgan".

The cache is a micro blending into its surroundings. It contains a small log book .Buildings very nearby can give tricky GPS readings. Please do not reveal anything relating to the hide within the logs ..Thank You..Your best stealth qualities will be required to locate the cache at GZ...Good Luck and enjoy.
