Geocache Description:

Flat and easy terrain - suitable for buggies or bikes, even wheelchairs.

Thameside Promenade is a wide towpath walk on the south bank of the River Thames. A park type setting of mown grass and specimen trees with attractive panoramic views across the river take in Caversham Court Gardens, St Peters Church, and Christchurch Meadow.

The nearby and present Caversham Bridge was built in 1926, but the earliest known reference to a bridge here dates back to 1231 when there was also a ferry nearby which would take poor people who could not afford to pay the tolls across the river. The old Caversham Bridge was steeped in history: King Charles I is reported to have crossed it around 1647 when he had a final meeting with his children before execution. It was also the scene of a bloody siege during the height of the English Civil War as Royalists and Parliamentary troops fought to gain control of the town.

Seats and litter bins are available and the promenade is suitable for cycling. A particularly popular and attractive park area, Thames Prom provides a pleasant setting for relaxing fishing. Although the river is often busy with rowers and other water traffic there is usually enough space for all river users to exist together. The banks are low and in good condition. Angling is prohibited for the first 200m of the site closest to Caversham Bridge which is a designated swan sanctuary. Any bird watching anglers may like to look out for the occasional exotic escape from the bird park a few miles upstream!
Public parking near to Crowne Plaza Hotel or at the Rivermead Leisure Complex (pay and display). Public toilets and tea/ice-cream shop nearby.
