Sixth in a series of nine caches set within the magnificent Stourhead Estate, taking in Stourhead House a Palladian mansion and Park Hill Camp, an Iron Age hillfort.
The circular walk of around 7km, will guide you away from the busy house and gardens, and into open parkland, woodland glades and peaceful lakeside settings, taking in many of the features not widely viewed by those visiting this rich and varied corner of Wiltshire’s historic landscape today. You should allow at least 2.5 hours to complete all 9 caches.
The area has been managed by the National Trust since 1946, although all of this series of caches are outside of the gardens and house itself, and hence there is no need to purchase any entry tickets to complete the series.
The cache is located just outside the Iron Age bivallate hillfort known locally as Park Hill. The hillfort itself covers some 6 acres and has two entrances on the east and west. It is one of two hillforts within the National Trust ownership and the other at Whitesheet Hill is well worth a visit too. Conservation work to protect the archaeology is underway within the monument, and the trees being felled are to protect the underlying archaeology.
