This is one of two tribute caches to Ginger Houser, a pioneer geocacher in British Columbia and one of the famous "WILD THINGIES."
This is also one of two caches I have hidden in The Rideau Canal System.
The 3 locks here marks the northern end of a section of the Rideau known as the "Long Reach", the longest section of the Rideau unbroken by locks. This area features a beautiful setting and a large stone arch dam.
Most of the early inhabitants of the village of Long Island were involved in the construction of the canal and remained in the area once the canal opened. The years following the construction saw schools, churches and a hotel at Long Island. By the mid-19th century Long Island was in decline and by 1890 the village was deserted and in ruins. Development in Manotick, founded in 1860, attracted many of the settlers from Long Island.
The Lietenant-Colonel referred to in the title is John By. A member of the Royal Engineers, he was sent by England in 1826, to supervise canal construction.
This is a straight forward cache . The cache is very small and contains only a log book and a pencil. There is lots of parking nearby. Depending on the time you go, there may be muggles close by. Please practice stealth. This cache can be enjoyed all year round. Please ensure you return the cache to its proper hiding spot.
This Cache is on Parks Canada and PERMISSION GRANTED BY Don MacKay
