Gram Parsons was a country rock musician who loved the desert and spent a lot of time in Joshua Tree. He often stayed at the Joshua Tree Inn, room 8, just west of the cache. He spent so much time partying there he ended up dying of a massive drug overdose in room 8 on September 19,1973. His manager and friend Phil Kaufman had made a death pact with Parsons, agreeing to cremate him in the desert. He rented a hearse, and with the help of the driver traveled to LAX and stole the body of Gram Parsons, drove it to Joshua Tree National Park, and cremated it on Cap Rock. Kaufman and his accomplice were arrested; however, there were no laws on the books against theft of a dead body or public creamation, so the pair were released. This became a bit of a folk tale, so much so that a movie was made about the incident called "Grand Theft Parsons." It's really campy and very bad but you can Netflix it if you like.
The cache is easily accessed if you park in the Hi Desert Cultural Center lot. Cache is in the crook of the tree trunk across from room 8.
