Geocache Description:

Another of Genesee County's beautiful cemeteries! Please only pull in far enough to get safely off the road; and, take care when backing up as the gate is very narrow. Watch for woodchuck holes on north side of cemetery. Cache is not near any graves. Please no night caching.

As you search for this cache, you visit Bailey's Mill Cemetery. Bailey's Mill is the location of a grist mill established about 1817 by Erastus Bailey and Bial Lathrop.
The mill is along the banks of the Oatka Creek. The dam there was built in 1828. Until just a few weeks ago, you could see the ruins of Bailey's Mill just down the road to the south (at the "T" in the road). The stone ruins were recently removed. Both the Bailey and the Lathrop families have loved ones buried in this cemetery.

One of the unique things about this cemetery is the fact that it has more than one family plot surrounded by beautiful iron-work enclosures. Notice the detail in these fences as you walk the area.

Unfortunately, this peaceful cemetery has been severely damaged several times over the past few years by storms. The large monument on the southwest corner was just recently toppled by the large tree that used to stand there. Sadly, this caused damage to many monuments around it, all but destroying some. Please avoid that corner as even a stray step may further destroy monument fragments.

Enjoy the peacefulness of this spot. Say a prayer for those who've been here before, and recall the days when only a "horse and buggy" could fit between the posts of the iron gate you enter as you come inside.

Congratulations to Octoberal for the FTF!
