Mature male tarantulas are commonly observed in this area for about 2 to 3 weeks in October when they wander across the roads in search of females. Tarantulas burrow into soil and feed at night. They rarely enter homes and are essentially harmless but they may produce a pinching bite if handled. Tarantulas defend themselves by flinging hairs from their abdomen which can be irritating to the touch. If you have a desire to capture one for a pet, the mature male tarantulas will only live for about a month or two. The female tarantulas have been known to live for about 20 years.
This is our first GeoCache hide. The day we placed this cache we saw two tarantulas on the road. We thought it would be a great location for those traveling along the 47 Bypass to exchange Traveling Bugs. I enjoy the view of the city from this location. You also have a great view of Pikes Peak to the north and of the Spanish Peaks to the south.
Original items in cache are a bunch of little toy spiders, game pen, couple of golf goody bags, mini heart pillow, Broncos toy truck, race car and 2 Tarantula Traveling Bugs.
Feel free to post pictures of any tarantulas you see. They will not be out very long. Only for about 2 to 3 weeks in October.
My first siting for 2008 was on October 2nd and last siting was November 12th.
First siting for 2009 was on October 13th and the last siting was October 24th (so far).
Congrats to Random Acts for the FTF.
