Geocache Description:

A kid friendy drive in the wheatbelt near Kulin

Each year on the first weekend in October the Kulin Races are run just outside the town off the Holt Rock road.

The “Holt Road road” is also know as the “Tin Horse Highway”.

Along the Tin Horse Highway are interesting Horse shaped figures made out of recycled farm items.
Some of the models are made from 20ltr and 200lt drums welded together with Chains wheels, scrap iron and a lot of country ingenuity. Only someone that has lived out here and learnt how to make do with what was on the farm will understand how to make art out of refuse.

Most of the Horses get a fresh coat of paint and a bit of remodeling in the run-up to the October Races but you can see them all year as they are permanent sculptures.
From year to year things are added and removed so no two years are ever the same. We always try to find an excuse to divert along Holt Rock road no matter where we are going.

This year the Horse with the skirt wearing lipstick stood out as the winner to us but we noticed the Police car radar trap horses that made us laugh the last time was gone. We hope they are in the process of updating it from the tired old Gemini they were using before to a newer model.
This is a cache for Children and those that wish they still were children. The kids will make you come back here every time you get within 100km of Kulin
WARNING:Don’t let the kids run on the road as it can be busy, the road is used by heavy trucks be safe when taking photos or finding the cache.
Check the Kulin town website for other details including Race weekend.

Places to stay:
We have stayed in the local pub on occasions and found the people to be great fun. The food was great and the pub is impressive in a semi-grand way. We loved the wide hallways and the wood floors.
While we were testing out the wine and beer list the barman was trying out new cocktail ideas and it was time to turn in for the night when we decided the rock wall behind the fireplace looked like a climbing wall but we had been warned that this could happen by one of the old barflys sitting on his pony at the bar.

Mini dictionary
Barfly = Person that sits and occupies his personal chair at the bar……all day.
Pony = Very small beer 4oz drunk mainly by old barflys.

Alternative accommodation: The caravan park has old rail carriages to stay in or bring your own caravan or tent.

Don’t drive through all the old country towns try staying a little longer instead, we know you will be back.
