Gravel Road access via Hyden-Norseman Road.
This cache is located on the Hyden-Norseman Road. You do not need a 4wd and towing a caravan is no problems but there are some corrugations. We don’t consider it difficult and it does cut a lot of road distance between the eastern states and Perth but as always make you own decisions before attempting this road.
This road is a dry weather road with road conditions listed online with the shire website and also on large signs at each end of the road.
In summer it will be very hot and winter nights very cold. Be prepared.
There are numerous camping places to stay on the Hyden-Norseman road.
We placed this cache after camping overnight on the shores of a large salt lake called “Lake Johnson”. The lake was dry even though winter had just finished. We enjoyed a walk on the salt lake and found many people have written their names in the salt crust and some fool had tried driving on it. From the marks in the lake bed we suggest he was extremely bogged.
That night we made a pleasant fire in the round fire pit and used the picnic table as our kitchen. There is also a clean and well maintained composting toilet. All this is supplied by the local council.
We stayed overnight and watched the star show above until it was time to turn in for the night. We woke up to the sounds of bird calls at about 5am. This meant we could re-kindle the fire and see the sunrise over the lake before the flies found their way to our breakfast.
The western end of the camp ground seems to be better protected from wind that the other side.
