Located in French Farm bay in Akaroa harbour
French Farm was named when the French Settlers and Navy came to Akaroa Harbour. Commodore Lavaud made a garden and nursery there for the crew of his frigate L'Aube. 15 sailors, under a Quartermaster, looked after the gardens.
Cache is located on the edge of a grassy area on the foreshore. This used to have a 'Fairy Toadstool' picnic table, hence the name. Removed in May 2010.
A school was opened here in 1877. The old school house remains (with a small bell tower), renovated now with a large cream house, up on the hill behind the grassy area.
One of the original French Farm houses stands alone in a paddock, approx 500m to the NW. This is now a Historic Place but is on Private land.
