The peaceful pirate Balanche had been eluding pursuit for days. Finally last night he had seen what he was looking for, an inland waterway where he might be able to avoid being found long enough to hide the booty that his unknown assailant was certainly trying to wrest from his possession. He travelled up this waterway until he found a place to land. He dropped anchor and went ashore at N 42* 39.475. It was a quiet spot well shaded. The landing was not that difficult and looked quiet now, but he knew that at times it could be bustling. There was a shelter where he could take refuge and repast, and in close proximity a yard where children often played forgetting, for awhile at least, their toils. He knew he was in the hamlet of Penn Yan, in the greater state of Nova York, but in the near distance he could see the New China. He believed his assailants to be lost, he had not seen them since taking evasive action on the previous eve but still he was not sure. I must hide this treasure trove he thought to himself else I will be pursued again and again till surely it will be lost.
Balanche headed upstream on a well trod path leading from his landing, surely there must be someplace to secure such a treasure. He crossed a bridge that led him to an open field. He considered the bridge briefly but in the end decided that it looked like far too obvious a spot, he could see many signs left behind by the muggle tribes that he knew to inhabit this land and often congregated in such spots to socialize and all too often cause mischief if it could be found. Now the path lead slightly uphill before descending to a small port, much more convenient to landing. This one too had a shelter from inclement weather and a spot for children’s respite. He noticed as well that it had other facilities of relief but on closer inspection they were not always open. This spot looked meaner slightly harsher but maybe it was only the lack of foliage for shade. Across the barren plain he could see a forest looming on the border, maybe if he headed there.
Upon reaching the far side of the paved plain he found white fences delineating the area set aside for the storage of transportation while men ventured out to meet the fates of Posidean and his friends. One of these pointed off into the old forest. Following its heading he could see an old post higher than most standing guard as it were at the head of a trail much fainter than that which he had followed so far. Methinks that this might be just the place he said as he headed into the woods.
He entered the woods and soon found what he sought, a perfect spot for hiding his booty. “Let me treasure lie here.” he said to himself. Suddenly he heard voices behind him. “Damn, they still follow me.” He quietly secured his spoils, but how to remember this spot he thought. Quickly he marked the spot, but how to return to it he thought. Jotting down some numbers he then hid them under his hat and exited the wood. He exited just as his pursuers arrived in the area. Nonchalantly he searched to find a place to hide his last note lest he was found and searched. Looking around he found it. “There’s the spot ” he said. N42* 39.474 W 077* 03 545
