Geocache Description:

Very Easy Cache Just Off The Highway

Small black container
This cache is located at the former entrance to the Colowyo coal camp. Colowyo Coal was started way back in the early 1900's. It was a premier mine for many years. It supplied coal to a growing empire in Moffat County and the northwest corner of Colorado. The camp and coal processing facilities were located up the canyon to your west. In 1974 the mine was bought out by W.R. Grace who proceeded to change it from an underground mine to a strip mine. Part of the overburden they stripped was dumped in the canyon erasing almost 70 years of history. My father spent 27 years working at the underground mine. I spent one year of my childhood living in the coal camp. This was also my first real job after I graduated high school. By that time it was only making custom or house coal. I spent 2 winters working here before it closed in 1974.
