Geocache Description:

A camouflaged micro cache NOT placed in or on any stonework, the cache contains a FTF prize, log book and pencil.

Parking for this cache is on the Moulton to Boughton Road, please park carefully as this is a very busy road with several bends and hidden dips.

This is the second of my series based on the "Follies of Boughton Park" a brief history of which can be read in my Bunkers Hill cache (GC1HORK).

The Spectacle.

The Spectacle is built on the boundary of Moulton and Boughton Church Parishes, originally built about 1770 it is now a Grade II listed structure.
The Spectacle is really an Arched Gateway (similar to the "Drayton Arch" built at Wroxton Abbey near Banbury in 1750)and comprises two semi circular castellated towers joined by a castellated arch.
Local tradition says that the Spectacle was positioned so that it framed Moulton Parish Church when viewed from Boughton Park.
Between the 1920's and 1950's the wing walls suffered damage and the 3 crenellations above the arch keystone were removed as is was thought the weight may cause the arch to collapse. This had the reverse effect as the reduced side pressure on the towers caused the arch to slip, when cracks appeared in the arch stonework it was decided to rebuild the Spectacle. The work was carried out in 1992 by the Scott family with small grants from Daventry District Council and Northamptonshire County Council.
